Thanksgiving Run: Registration is under way for the seventh annual runLawrence Thanksgiving Day Run, Nov 25. Start the holiday with a morning 5K run. A free 1K kids fun run starts after the 5K. Trail Hawks to host 10K trail run: The Lawrence Trail Hawks will host the second annual “Sanders’ Saunter Heavy 10k Trail Run” Nov. 20 on Clinton Lake’s North Shore Trails.

“Heavy” means the course is slightly longer than an official 10-kilometer race — about 6.5 miles. The Lawrence Trail Hawks are Lawrence’s original trail- and ultra-running club.

Jingle Bell Run comes to town Dec. 12: The North East Chapter of the Kansas Arthritis Foundation is holding the second annual “Jingle Bell Run” in Lawrence. The run will take place on Dec. 12 (Sunday), beginning at the Community Building (115 W. 11th St., Lawrence). Registration and packet pick-up is at 7 a.m. and the 5K run begins at 8:30 a.m. There is also a 1-mile family stroll. Wedge Wins League: Lawrence High graduate Roy Wedge, a freshman at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, won the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Oct. 30 in a time of 26:08 on a hilly course at Moore State Park in Paxton, Mass. Wedge was named both NEWMAC Runner of the Year and NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and earned all-conference honors. MIT claimed its 13th straight conference championship on the men’s side.

UNO freshman Torneden honored: University of Nebraska at Omaha freshman Camren Torneden, Free State High’s former standout quarterback, was recently named the MIAA’s special teams player of the week.

Torneden, initally slated to redshirt this year, returned two kickoffs for 131 yards — one being a 94-yard touchdown that broke a 13-13 tie — to help the Mavericks down Pittsburg State last weekend.

The 5-foot-8 Torneden, who graduated from Free State in May, is averaging 38.1 yards on kickoff returns this season for the Mavs. He’s also carried the ball three times for 15 yards.

Olson Hole in One: Rodney Olson aced the 156-yard No. 2 hole Saturday at Lawrence Country Club. Warner Lewis and Kim Wells were witnesses.

Towner honored: Randy Towner, who left Alvamar Country Club recently to take a postion as general manager and head pro at Firekeeer Golf Course, has been named 2010 recipient of the the PGA Professional of the Year by the Midwest Section, PGA of America.

Samp places second: Lawrence Country Club assistant pro Kristen Samp placed second in the LPGA T&CP Central Section Championship played at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas.
