25 years ago: Cold weather greets Hawaiian-themed KU Homecoming parade

November 10, 2010

The 45-degree weather did not deter the Jayhawk faithful from putting on an extra sweater and turning out for the big Homecoming parade down Massachusetts Street. The parade included several marching bands and 14 floats, designed on the theme “Hawks Go Hawaiian.” It was the first time the parade had taken place on Mass Street in two decades.

Washington, D.C., was in a tizzy over the three-day visit of Britain’s Prince Charles and Princess Diana. The royal couple had tea with President and Mrs. Reagan before the princess visited a hospice and the prince attended an architects’ meeting on community rehabilitation.

Project SEAL (Save Energy Around Lawrence) was in its fifth (and what was expected to be its final) year. The project provided education on techniques on reducing heat loss in leaky homes as well as free weatherization kits, which included door sweeps, silicone caulking, insulation for water pipes and water heaters, weather stripping, and plastic covering for windows.
