25 years ago: KU basketball season began with a win over the Czechoslovakian national team

From the Lawrence Journal-World on Nov. 9, 1985:

  • Basketball season had once again begun at Kansas University. The Jayhawks, cheered on by 11,000 fans, had won 83-69 over the Czechoslovakian national team in Allen Fieldhouse.
  • The electrical and computer engineering program at KU, which had appeared to be in trouble at the end of the 1983-1984 academic year, was rebounding. The school had hired five new faculty members and was on the verge of selecting a new dean.
  • The Douglas County Treasurer’s Office was about to mail 38,000 tax statements, calling for $29 million in taxes, to area property owners.
  • Homes for sale in Lawrence were listed throughout the paper. They ranged price in from $41,000 for a bungalow in the 1900 block of Vermont, to a house in Alvamar listed at $175,000. Rentals available via the classified ads ranged from a “modern home in the country” for $225 a month, to $450 for a 4 BR, 2 bath house on the west side of town.
