100 years ago: Democrats sweep 1910 elections

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 9, 1910:

  • “DEMOCRATS SWEEP ENTIRE COUNTRY. A Democratic landslide similar to that overtaking the country when Cleveland defeated Harrison is reported from every section. At midnight it was virtually certain that the 62nd Congress would be controlled by the Democrats, and later returns merely increased their majorities…. In Kansas the gubernatorial contest is very close, but Stubbs will probably be elected by a small majority…. With a single exception the Republicans have elected the Douglas county ticket by safe majorities.”
  • “The day will soon be here when rubber will no longer be used for making automobile tires, at least that is the opinion of a number of gentlemen in Lawrence who have familiarized themselves with the new wheel manufactured by the Kansas Auto Wheel Co. The company is now located at 601 New Hampshire street and is busy rushing out a line of wheels for the trade. The new wheel is a combination of Osage orange wood and steel springs, giving a smooth easy motion to the automobile, doing away with punctures, and adding to the general comfort of the autoist.”
