Sheriff Vern Miller of Wichita, who had been recently elected Kansas attorney general, was asked about a campaign speech in which he had promised to come down hard on the “hippie community” in Lawrence. Miller responded, “Just watch. I believe in strong enforcement of the law and assistance to local law enforcement agencies…. You can go ahead and say I’m serving notice on them either to leave or cease and desist.”

Girl Scouts of Troop 92 and their troop leader were pictured picking up litter along south Louisiana Street. Combining their community litter project with work towards their bicycle badges, the girls were planning to complete 14 miles on their bikes, as well as fixing a hot lunch while on the road.

In Washington, the FAA announced a new rule prohibiting civilian pilots from consuming alcohol for eight hours before a flight. Secretary of Transportation John A. Volpe said, “The primary aim in issuing the new regulation is to cope not with the large segment of responsible pilots but with a small marginal group for whom it is needed.”
