25 years ago: Site plan for Catholic student center at Haskell approved

The numbers were in, and October in Lawrence had been a wet month indeed. There had been rain on 10 of the 31 days, and the rainfall total had been 6.95 inches, more than double the normal 3.22 inches. The year 1959 still stood as the record-holder, however, with 8.91 inches. There had been a one-day rainfall record in 1985, though – 3.72 inches had fallen on Oct. 10.

Landmark Hotels Inc., Topeka, the management firm operating the Lawrence Holidome, had initiated a request for $1.85 million in industrial revenue bonds to fund several renovation projects, including remodeling of the two restaurants and lounge at the hotel. Repairs to furniture and rooms and the parking lot were also planned.

City commissioners approved a site plan for a Catholic student center to serve Haskell Indian Junior College. Plans called for using an existing duplex at 2301 Barker for the center. Although the site plan included two residential buildings on the property, the other house would remain in residential use until a possible future expansion of the center.
