25 years ago: LMH’s new Wellness Center ready for first clients

Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s Wellness Center, located at 4120 Clinton Parkway, was set to open on Nov. 4. Its first clients were to be city firefighters who were taking their annual physical fitness assessments. Bob Billings, a former member of LMH’s board of trustees and president of Alvamar Inc., had offered free utilities and rent-free use of the building, which was located next to the Alvamar Racquet and Swim Club.

Associate District Judge Mike Malone had approved an agreement by which the Lawrence Opera House would be sold to pay debts incurred by Opera House Investments Inc. Money from the sale would go first to pay court proceedings and sale costs, then to pay the back taxes, and lastly to pay the University State Bank, who had brought the lawsuit against the investment company. Charles Oldfather, one of the co-defendants who had planned to purchase and remodel the building, said that he expected the bank would buy the property at the sale, and that he and partner David Millstein would then try to purchase it from the bank.
