40 years ago: Inclement weather might affect liquor-by-the-drink vote turnout

On the eve of Election Day, Kansans were poised to make their decisions whether to endorse Gov. Robert Docking for a third term and whether to legalize liquor by the drink. Secretary of State Elwill Shanahan was forecasting a turnout of 825,000 voters, basing her estimate mostly on strong interest in the liquor-by-the-ounce issue. However, snow flurries and freezing temperatures were forecast for northeast Kansas, and it was possible that this inclement weather might reduce the voting turnout.

A 16-year-old Lawrence High School girl had missed only one game out of 21 in the past week’s Journal-World Football Contest. Susan Schwanzie, LHS junior, had won the first-prize 15-pound turkey.

The dispatcher’s log at the Lawrence Police Department showed a report from 5:42 p.m. of a stray or loose cow in the 1200 block of Pennsylvania. Officers received another report of a cow – presumably the same one – about an hour later near 22nd and Barker. In both cases there was a “failed to make contact” notation. There were no further reports of anyone catching the bovine.
