25 years ago: Mice infestation plaguing Strong Hall

The east wing of Kansas University’s Strong Hall was suffering a mice infestation. Exterminators had sprayed the area, packets of poison had been put out, and sticky-traps had been used, all to no avail. The mice still “seemed to be enjoying themselves,” according to employees. “I went to the Regents Room and saw a tail go around the corner,” said one administrative research assistant. One administrator added, “Actually, there are more rats up here than there are mice, but I won’t mention any names.”

Lawrence police reported “just minor stuff” by Halloween pranksters the night before, including three broken car windows and a slight “egging” of the exterior of Rusty’s Food Center at Sixth and Kasold.

The Lawrence United Fund reported that it had received the first six-figure donation in its history. The corporation, employees, and retired employees of Hallmark Cards, Inc., had donated $101,177, which put the total so far at about $350,000. The goal for 1985 was $500,000.
