100 years ago: Regatta held on the Kaw

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 29, 1910: “It has been definitely and publicly announced that Dr. J. K. Hart is to leave Baker University to go to the State University of Washington. Dr. Hart’s work here as the professor of philosophy has been very highly thought of and his courses have been filled to overflowing at all times…. The Haskell Indian baseball team returned home last night from a three days’ trip during which they played four games, winning two out of four. Altogether they consider their trip a successful one and certainly did some fine playing…. A better day for the big regatta being held on the Kaw could not have been desired. The regatta is practically in its infancy out here, but shows signs every year of becoming one of the popular events of the season…. The Burleigh Cash Company was compelled to call off its play last night on account of the extremely damp weather. Tonight’s play will be “Ten Nights in a Bar Room,” a production familiar to most everyone. It tells a clean temperance story and is a play which everybody should see enacted.”
