40 years ago: Kansas governor wants show of force

Gov. Robert Docking, campaigning for a third term, restated his belief that a show of force is the most effective means of controlling rioting and disorder such as Kansas University had experienced during the previous month.

Both the city and the county were showing rises in real estate valuations. The county was showing a rise of about $4.45 million in taxable real estate, while the city’s increase was listed at $3.9 million.

Lawrence High School senior Charlene Roberman had written “Preludio Al Futuro,” a musical composition to be played by the Concert Band and Symphonic Winds Ensemble during the LHS commencement.

Albert Salisbury was scheduled to retire from the KU Chemistry Department after 44 years of service. He had been hired in 1926 as a technical assistant, setting up lab material and equipment for the chemistry classes. He also recalled that during World War II, when meat prices were extremely high, he and another man were secretly raising chickens in Bailey Hall.
