25 years ago: Third-graders collect cans

Kansas University named Robert L. Shelton as the new university ombudsman – the person who helps find solutions for faculty, student and staff problems. The current ombudsman, William Balfour, was set to resign at the end of June.

KU earthquake researchers were turning their attention to a recently discovered underground fault in west central Oklahoma.

After eight years as an automobile dealer, Bob Hopkins was selling his Volkswagen franchise to Jim Clark Motors and his Subaru franchise to Turner Chevrolet Inc. He was planning to spend the remainder of the year traveling with his wife before buying a new franchise in the Sun Belt.

Hallmark Cards made a corporate gift of $25,000 to a youth sports complex planned for southwest of Lawrence. The gift raised the total fundraising amount to over $200,000.

Third-graders at St. John School collected aluminum cans for a food project of USA for Africa. The students had raised $122 so far.
