40 years ago: Two shot in midnight fight

For the second time in a week, a jury of the Douglas County District Court reduced the amount of compensation awarded a landowner for the widening of K-10.

Officials were investigating several small fires that had occurred at the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity during the previous Friday. Fires had apparently been set in a trash can, in some hallway debris, and in a bath tub.

Two people were shot and one hit with a baseball bat during a midnight fight at Fifth and Locust streets.

A Senate vote in Washington D.C. was expected to boost the rate for a first-class letter from six cents to eight cents.
