From the Lawrence Daily World for May 23, 1910: “As yet Lawrence hasn’t had much of an opportunity to see Halley’s comet, since the clouds have persisted in obscuring the whole solar system with the stars thrown in. Other places, near here, have had a good view but that hasn’t helped us any. The visitor, which is now fast on its way out of the limits of the solar system, can be seen plainly about nine o’clock this evening. Go up to the top of Mt. Oread where the trees won’t obstruct your view. … It isn’t every day that a person can escape injury when the buggy in which you happen to be riding turns turtle, especially falling as you might, on a hard brick pavement. Mr. Milligan, manager of the Kress store, and a lady companion whose name is withheld, does not think much of his lucky escape, however, inasmuch as in the fall he did not release his hold on the cigar he had in his mouth at the time.”
