40 years ago: KPL audit reveals hospital underbilling

Lawrence High senior Andrew Benton, 18, was awarded the school’s coveted Citizenship Award. The award is given on the basis of all-around good citizenship, participation in activities and service to school.

Also at LHS, eleven-year veteran Donald Binns and first-year Lawrence teacher Garry Gregg tied in an election by students for outstanding teachers.

Seven long-time faculty at Kansas University were facing the mandatory retirement age of 70 years old. The faculty members’ length of service ranged from 20 to 47 years at KU.

A recent audit of Kansas Power and Light revealed the fact that KPL had been underbilling Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 20 years. The difference (an additional tenth of a cent per kilowatt hour) came about because LMH had been billed the reduced rate for bodies fully under city control. Although a municipal hospital, LMH operated primarily on its own funds and was governed by an appointed board and therefore could not legally receive the reduced rate.
