KU freshman earns conference honor

Kansas University freshman thrower Mason Finley was named Big 12 track outstanding male freshman of the year Wednesday by the league coaches.
Finley won the shot put and discus at last weekend’s Big 12 outdoor. He ranks third nationally in both events. His top throw in the shot put (63-21⁄4) ranks fifth on KU’s all-time chart, while his top discus mark (197-5) ranks fourth. Other awards: Men’s coach of year, Nebraska’s Gary Pepin; women’s coach of year: Texas A&M’s Pat Henry; Oklahoma State’s John Kosgei, male outstanding performer; Iowa State’s Lisa Koll, women’s outstanding performer; Oklahoma’s Karen Shump, female freshman of year.
