The FDA ordered a halt to the production of skin-care products made from milk cultures supplied by Culture Farms Inc., which operated at 13th and Massachusetts in Lawrence. A Topeka hearing had been called to determine whether a March 1985 cease-and-desist order, issued by the Kansas securities commissioner, was warranted. The Kansas order alleged that the operation violated Kansas security law and constituted an illegal multi-level scheme.

A few clouds the previous afternoon had threatened the outdoor KU commencement, but by 7 p.m. the sun was shining on the 3,800 degree candidates as they marched down the hill and into Memorial Stadium. Gov. John Carlin, quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson, said, “’The reward of a thing well done, is to have done it.’ Well, you’ve done it,” continued the governor, bringing cheers and applause from the crowd.

Douglas County commissioners were considering bids from four companies interested in replacing the old phone system in the county courthouse and judicial center.
