100 years ago: Mt. Oread street car line still awaiting finish

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 19, 1910: “It was expected some time ago that the south loop of the street car line down Mt. Oread would be finished and ready for the cars long before this, but owing to the difficulty in getting the rock from the crusher, it has been impossible to complete the ballasting of about 500 remaining feet…. In Baldwin last evening, just after starting their first run of pictures at the Co-Ed, the moving picture gallery, fire broke out in the room causing considerable excitement. Although the room was well filled no one was hurt in getting out of the building. A hardware man next door put out the fire with a small fire extinguisher…. For the third time since it was founded, the University of Kansas will confer the degree of doctor of philosophy this year…. Has any one thought of the Lawrence baseball team for this season yet? Here it is getting well along towards June and action for a team has just begun. Almost every other town in the state of Kansas has its ball team and started playing on regular schedule a month ago.”
