Firebirds softball will face Ravens today

The Free State High softball team will travel to Olathe Northwest for a 4:45 p.m. tilt against the Ravens today in the first round of the regional tournament.

The Firebirds (5-15) will be the No. 7 seed, while the Ravens (19-1) are the No. 2 seed.

“They’ve got two pitchers that combined are 19-1,” Free State coach Lee Ice said. “One of them is second in the league in strikeouts. They’ve got a shortstop that’s stolen 20-plus bases. … We’re going to have to play a perfect game to have a chance to be in the game with them.”

Fortunately for the Firebirds, they’ve had some recent success against Olathe Northwest — the defending Class 6A state champion.

Despite falling, 3-1 and 6-0, in a pair of games earlier this spring, the Firebirds led the Ravens, 1-0, with six outs left to play in the first game.

“We just have to put an entire game together, which we haven’t done a very good job of,” Ice said. “We have to play the entire 21 outs.”

The winner of tonight’s game will face the winner of the game between No. 3 Manhattan and No. 6 Junction City later in the evening in the 6:30 p.m. championship.
