Court dates set for ex-football players

Two former Kansas University football players appeared in Douglas County District Court on Monday afternoon, after being arrested Friday in connection with an attempted armed robbery.

Jamal Greene and Vernon Brooks are each charged with one count of aggravated burglary, three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm and one count of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.

They are accused of entering an apartment at Tuckaway Apartments, 2600 W. Sixth St., wearing ski masks, gloves and armed with semi-automatic guns. They reportedly ordered four people inside to lie down on the ground.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

The victims gave police a vehicle description that eventually led to the arrests.

On Monday, a judge set their bond at $100,000. Brooks is scheduled to appear back in court May 27. Greene’s next court appearance was set for June 10.

Greene, a defensive tackle from Kansas City, Kan., was dismissed from the team on Friday. Brooks, a KU linebacker who played sparingly in 2009, was dismissed from the team on the opening day of spring practice by new coach Turner Gill, for what the coach called a “violation of our team policy.”
