Area residents interested in a proposal for a new Amtrak route can learn more at a meeting on Tuesday.

The Kansas Department of Transportation will provide a summary of its Amtrak Passenger Rail Study from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. Second Street.

The study looks at four options for expanding passenger rail service in parts of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The proposals would increase the amount of Amtrak service in Lawrence.

The study is one of the early steps in determining whether the expanded passenger service would be financially feasible.

A formal presentation of the findings will begin at 6:45 p.m., with the rest of the meeting time devoted to an open house where residents can ask questions on their own.

a "Tuesday study"? Is this some special study that can only be accomplished on Tuesday's? Is Tuesday, Ride the Train Day? Inquiring minds want to know!

Just because respondents to a survey say they are going to ride a train, doesn't mean that they actually will. People tend to say what they think the surveyor wants to hear.

So, I expect ridership won't make projections and taxpayers will have to pick up a bigger share.

They have to study whether Amtrak is financially feasible? It never has been.
