The Douglas County AIDS Project is launching a new volunteer program. DCAP is recruiting adults to serve as “buddies” for its clients. A buddy is a specially trained companion volunteer who works one-on-one with a specific client. The buddy will be a social contact, a listener and an advocate, as well as someone who helps with the tasks of everyday life. Buddies commit to serving one year, and would generally be called upon two to four times a month to help out in various capacities, both functional and social. For more information, contact DCAP at dcapcm@sunflower.com or 843-0040.

Immediate needs

• The Lawrence Youth Ensemble seeks volunteers to assist with Theatre in South Park, a free camp for kids ages 6 to 12 that takes place June 7-11. Hours of the camp are 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Volunteers will play theater games with the group, encourage imaginative play and assist the group leaders with activities. There will be a volunteer orientation at 6 p.m. June 1 on the east side of South Park. Teen volunteers are welcome. To volunteer, contact Rachael at lawrenceyouthensemble@ gmail.com or 785-218-9507.

• The Social Service League needs volunteers to help with its $5 Bag Sale, which will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Volunteers are needed to sort the clothing, as well as help manage the sale. If you would like to volunteer for any amount of time, stop by the Social Service League store at 905 R.I.

• There are numerous volunteer opportunities for the 2010 Tour of Lawrence in early July. T-shirts and meals will be provided to all volunteers. Course setup on Saturday morning, July 3, starts at 5 a.m. at Wescoe Hall at Kansas University, with the KU Campus Circuit Race beginning at 9 a.m. On July 4, setup for the Downtown Criterium begins at 8 a.m., with the first race at 11 a.m. Course marshals will be needed on both Saturday and Sunday, and other needs include registration, volunteer table and officials’ assistants.
