100 years ago: Sheriff shot during arrest attempt

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 17, 1910: “Deputy Sheriff Ebb Woods was shot in the calf of the leg about 9 o’clock this morning at Eudora upon attempting to arrest one Charles Trude, wanted by the police at Ionia Mich. When Deputy Sheriff Woods whipped out a big 32-20 revolver and opened fire, Woods did the same and before the shooting fray was over, the men had exchanged five shots apiece…. A letter was received yesterday by Allie Carrol from the War Department at Washington, stating that they were in possession of a box owned by his brother Ed. Carrol and asking for instructions as to what to do with it. Ed. Carrol was well known here in Lawrence and there are many people who will remember his sad death in the Phillipines in 1903…. Frances Jaedicke was able to be at the store today for the first time since being injured in an explosion of gas last Friday…. The Street Car Company began placing the new electric signs on their cars today. The signs will show up clearly at night and will indicate the street in which the car runs.”
