Selig: All-Star game staying put
New York ? Baseball commissioner Bud Selig is ignoring calls to move next year’s All-Star game from Phoenix because of Arizona’s new immigration law.
Asked about such demands at a news conference Thursday following an owners meeting, he responded with a defense of baseball’s minority-hiring record.
“Apparently all the people around and in minority communities think we’re doing OK. That’s the issue, and that’s the answer,” he said. “I told the clubs today: ‘Be proud of what we’ve done.’ They are. We should. And that’s our answer. We control our own fate, and we’ve done very well.”
Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said he wouldn’t participate in next year’s All-Star game if it remains in Arizona because of the law, which empowers police to determine a person’s immigration status. The Major League Baseball Players Association condemned the law, and Rep. Jose Serrano, a New York Democrat whose district includes Yankee Stadium, sent Selig a letter asking him to move the game.

UK confident in Calipari
Lexington, Ky. — Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart hears the reports that NBA teams are pursuing John Calipari.
He’s fine with it. In a way, Barnhart views it as a compliment for the remarkable job Calipari has done reviving the Wildcats.
“I think that any time you’ve got a coach of his quality, there’s going to be conversations about that,” Barnhart said Thursday.
Yet Barnhart isn’t worried about Calipari bolting for the pros.
“I’m very confident he’s going to be our coach next year,” he said. “He’s made comments to me that he wants to be here a long time.”
Several reports have linked Calipari to the vacant head-coaching position with the NBA’s Chicago Bulls. Calipari has ties to the organization through star point guard Derrick Rose, who played for Calipari at Memphis.
Calipari also raised eyebrows Tuesday night by making an appearance in Cleveland, where good friend LeBron James and the rest of the Cavaliers lost to the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Cushing denies drug use
Houston — Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing said Thursday he neither injected nor ingested any banned substances even though he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug.
Cushing was suspended for four games without pay last week for violating the NFL’s drug policy. His appeal was denied. Cushing confirmed he tested positive for HCG, a fertility drug that is on the league’s banned substance list.
“The question of how it got into my body is still unclear,” he said. “It’s something that I’m very personally concerned about, just the fact that how it’s there and what’s going to determine it from happening again, and that’s something we’re going to have to medically investigate.”
