Emergency crews responded early Thursday morning to an apartment fire in the 1400 block of Apple Lane.

Douglas County emergency dispatchers received the call about 4:19 a.m.

Lawrence police and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical units responded to the call. The person who reported the fire told dispatchers they could see smoke coming from the building.

Crews on scene confirmed flames were showing from the second level of the building.

One resident was getting up to let her dogs out when she saw the smoke. Lawrence resident and KU graduate student Sherrie Mason lives at the complex and said she was getting up to walk her dogs when she saw the smoke. She alerted one of her neighbors and they were both able to get out of the building unharmed.

Crews worked to extinguish the fire from both sides of the eight-unit apartment building.

Residents stood in the roadway with umbrellas and watched the incident unfold.

No cause or damage estimate was available early Thursday morning.

No one was reported injured during the incident.

Another case of a lightning strike that smoldered for a while before finally lighting? There certainly was some electricity in the air yesterday.

Reason number 624 of why I don't own a dog: Having to get up around 4:00am to let them out!!

When I first glanced, I thought it said Apple Lane and was going to point out the irony and laugh. I hate Abersleeze and their management...anyway, I hope that everyone/thing is safe at Apple Lane.

I'm with you, SWJayhawk. After they switched management companies it went down hill Fast. They rank right up there with Gage now, just on the west side of town. It'll be interesting to hear what the cause of this was. Glad to read everyone's alright!
