Futures pro wins LCC pro-am

Gerina Mendoza, a Duramed Futures Tour women’s professional golfer, shot a 69 Sunday for a two-day total of 3-under-par 137 to earn the $900 first-place purse in the 2010 Your Charity Pro-Am played at Lawrence Country Club.

Jerry Magnuson fueled the winning team by carding a hole-in-one with a 6-iron on the 145-yard 17th hole. His teammates — wife Janet Magnuson and Dave and Michele Johnson and pro Stephanie Connelly — witnessed the shot. The winning team designated Bert Nash Community Health Center as the recipient of the $500 first prize.

Mendoza, who ranks third on the Futures Tour money list, won the event by 10 strokes. Taryn Durham, who can be seen competing in the Golf Channel’s Big Break Sandals Resort beginning June 21, won $500 for a second-place finish, and rookie Chelsea Curtis took $350 for third.

“I think it’s a great course,” Curtis said. “It’s a course that you can get an advantage from playing over and over and over because there are so many different positions, so many different shots. The greens are great, with a lot of subtle breaks. It’s not the longest course, but it’s a great layout.”

The Futures Tour pros will compete in the Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City Championship next weekend at Leawood South Country Club.
