Veritas golf finishes in third

Veritas Christian’s boys golf team made the most of its final tune-up before next week’s state tournament, rolling to a third-place finish in Tuesday’s nine-team Veritas Invitational at Alvamar Public Golf Course.

The Eagles were paced by freshman Nick Gardner, who shot a team-best 82 on the par-72 course to finish sixth overall despite windy conditions.

“I think everybody struggled today because (of the wind), but I think our guys persevered,” said Veritas coach Mark Brown, whose team shot a 390 for the day. “To come out with a medalist and a team medal is pretty good.”

Nick Bennett (100) was Veritas’ second-best finisher, while Joshua Myers (102) and Elijah Penny (106) rounded out the team’s top four.

Kansas City Christian took the team title with a score of 329, and Olathe’s Christ Prep was second with 332.

Christ Prep’s Joey Johnson shot a 74 to take the individual title.

With Tuesday’s tournament now in the books, Veritas will turn its collective attention toward next week’s Kansas Christian Athletic Association state tournament, held Monday and Tuesday at Kansas City’s Ironhorse Golf Club.

“The course will be similar (to Alvamar), and it gave them a good feel for it,” Brown said. “They’re excited to finish well.”
