Suspect’s murder trial scheduled for October

A judge has scheduled a murder case to go to trial, four years after the crime took place.

Anthony Vital’s body was found in a field west of Lawrence in October 2006.

Vital, a Lawrence hip-hop artist, had been shot multiple times.

Tuesday, after a series of delays, Douglas County District Judge Robert Fairchild ordered Durrell Jones to stand trial on first-degree murder charges in October.

The trial had been scheduled for this week, until Jones’ attorney unexpectedly withdrew from the case.

He is now being represented by Lawrence attorney John Kerns.

The trial is expected to last one week, and will begin Oct. 18 or Oct. 25, depending on the judge’s schedule.

A co-defendant in the case, Major Edwards, already entered a guilty plea to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
