K.C. driver injured after running car into Lawrence apartment building

Lawrence police respond after a man suffered a medical condition and ran his car into a building shortly after noon on Tuesday, May 4, 2010.

A Kansas City, Kan., man was injured Tuesday afternoon after suffering a medical condition and running his car into a building, Lawrence police said.

The accident occurred about 12:30 p.m. at Jacksonville Apartments, near Seventh Street and Monterey Way.

According to a witness at the scene, the driver suffered a seizure while driving down Monterey Way. The car veered onto a sidewalk and into an apartment unit.

Tenants in the unit just above said they were not home at the time but received a phone call about the crash. Travis Toms said his apartment sustained some damage as well, “It’s a little shifted in my room. My tables are all slanted a little bit.”

The damaged unit was one of a few that are vacant at the apartment complex. “It was real lucky that there wasn’t anybody living in here, because I’m sure this is where their bed would’ve been, so major luck on that,” said Eric Johnson, maintenance worker for Midwest Property Management.

Johnson went to work shortly after the accident to begin making repairs. He said the crash destroyed six wall studs. Water and gas services were turned off.

Johnson said that he expects the hole in the wall to be repaired quickly, but it will take a couple of days to make interior fixes.

The extent of the driver’s injuries was unclear, but he was walking and talking with police following the incident.
