Driver seizure sends car into building

A driver with a medical condition reportedly had a seizure Tuesday and lost control of the vehicle, sending it into the side of an apartment complex. No one was injured in the incident and no charges are expected to be filed against the driver. Enlarge video

A Kansas City, Kan., man was injured Tuesday afternoon after suffering a medical condition and running his car into a building, Lawrence police said.

Crash location

The accident occurred about 12:30 p.m. at Jacksonville Apartments, near Seventh Street and Monterey Way.

According to a witness at the scene, the driver suffered a seizure while driving down Monterey Way. The car veered onto a sidewalk and into an apartment unit.

Tenants in the unit just above said they were not home at the time but received a phone call about the crash. Travis Toms said his apartment sustained some damage as well, “It’s a little shifted in my room. My tables are all slanted a little bit.”

The damaged unit was one of a few that are vacant at the apartment complex. “It was real lucky that there wasn’t anybody living in here, because I’m sure this is where their bed would’ve been, so major luck on that,” said Eric Johnson, maintenance worker for Midwest Property Management.

Johnson went to work shortly after the accident to begin making repairs. He said the crash destroyed six wall studs. Water and gas services were turned off.

Johnson said that he expects the hole in the wall to be repaired quickly, but it will take a couple of days to make interior fixes.

The extent of the driver’s injuries was unclear, but he was walking and talking with police following the incident.

I hope the driver is alright but bulidings beware! The cars (not Rick Ocasek) are coming after you. Louise's West, Taco Bell and now this. I thought the person on person violence was bad but now, Maximum Overdrive is in full effect. I bet it is Obama doing all of this to try and make us forget about the small oil leak in the ocean, right Tom?

The Maximum Overdrive comment did it. I cannot stop laughing

I'm waiting for Tom's ridiculous reply.

Someone drove into Westgate Apartments several months ago, also. It was in the middle of the night, and a tenant woke up with the front bumper only six inches from his head!

Close call!

Hey, free insulation! Here come the looters.

Hope the driver is Ok..... Thank God no one was injured in the building.

This is what happened.... 2 others and myself saw the whole thing.. The three of us were running after the car. The wall of the apartment was like cardboard.

The man turned onto Comet from 6th street - slowed down like he was going to turn into Stone Creek - started having a seizure - slumped over the wheel - jumped the curb behind the restaurant - car was going slow - then the car was on 7th St for a few seconds and then jumped the curb for the apartment complex and went right through a bedroom wall in the lower unit.

Luckily no one was living in the apartment and the guy walked to the ambulance.

would appear to be short a few studs in that wall - they came loose from bottom plate? Rotted? Looks like too close to ground, i think must be rotted plate/not treated. Any framers/builders wanna weigh in for us?

pizzapete 4 years, 7 months ago

Good to hear the driver is OK. And yea, there seems to be very little holding that wall together.

jcesmom 4 years, 7 months ago

It was a dodge - hardly any damage to it. There were no studs where the car hit.

I think the Bluth Company built about half the apartment complexes in town...no wonder cars slice them with ease.

George_Braziller 4 years, 7 months ago

That's one crappy piece of construction. It looks like a cardboard box with siding attached.

Ron Holzwarth 4 years, 7 months ago

Sounds like a lot of other apartments here in town.

I thought the same thing, though "shoebox" came to mind instead. Ah, West Lawrence, the Mecca of ticky-tacky.

gccs14r 4 years, 7 months ago

Hey, at least the studs were on 16" centers and not 24".

I can't stand that combination sheathing/siding/termite magnet crap that local contractors use to build "modern" structures.

Ron Holzwarth 4 years, 7 months ago

I've been told that at least one apartment complex here in town is like many others, it was built to crummy construction standards, and expected to last only 50 years.

Oh, and my guess is that seizure-boy is about to lose his license for medical reasons. It's just pure luck that all he killed was a building.

Uhjh 4 years, 7 months ago

Should not have been driving with his condition.

Christina Hoffman 4 years, 7 months ago

Actually in Kansas if you are seizure free(controlled) for 6 months you can legally obtain your license. Also if you are controlled for that long there is no way of knowing if you will ever have another one. It was just a fluke and i am glad no one was hurt. Hopefully he gets checked out and gets back to living a seizure controlled life. (its not so easy to obtain a seizure free life!)

Bottom line is that nobody was injured. We should be thankful for that.

Getting back to the story line instead of construction issues. What are all these KC, Kansas people doing running around Lawrence and running into buildings at 1 oclock in the morning here in Lawrence when they should be back in KC?

Kelly Johnson 4 years, 7 months ago

The story says this accident happened around 12:30 pm and the pics are taken in daylight. It was clearly not the middle of the night lol.

So, all you peeps in the know - just where ARE well-built apartment buildings in this town?
