Simple accessories put style in spring 2010

Here are some simple ways to accessorize for spring 2010:

Cat-eye glasses:

Whether you wear prescription eyeglasses or just sunglasses to block out the sun, look into purchasing a funky shape. This spring, cat-eye glasses are popping up all over. Their upturned ends add instant intelligence and a bit of sass to every outfit. Watch Marilyn Monroe’s 1953 film “How to Marry a Millionaire” for inspiration. A classic accessory that sits front and center, right on your nose is bound to make a statement. Check out Sonia Rykiel’s eyewear line for some of my favorite frames — instantly gorgeous, kitty-cat eyes!

Black watches:

Look for a watch that’s techy. Show off your athletic side with the sports watch of your choice.

Look for a black, monotone watch that blends in and easily transitions into a dressy accessory. Check out cool models by Alessi, Brera or Nixon for some unique options.

Chain mail and mesh:

Black accessories take on an entirely different aesthetic, created with the depth and texture of chain mail and mesh. Look for shoes, bracelets, purses and apparel made from these fun, holey metals, plastics and fabrics. Pair yours with a flouncy, feminine dress or top with plenty of frills for a balanced look that won’t look too hard-edge. Also, try sneaking a bit of black lace socks under black heels, or wear a lace shirt beneath your blazer for a look that screams D&G Spring 2010.

Natural weaves:

Woven accessories made from straw or raffia always feel like spring picnics and summer lake excursions. Find an oversize, flouncy straw hat, or one with more structure. Incorporate straw bags with leather accessories, lightweight and easy fabrics, and comfortable tops. It is easy to go overboard with a brown, tan and white color palette, so don’t be afraid to throw in some other colors. Incorporate rough, artisanal jewelry or silver pieces that add some luster to your earth-toned outfit. See shoes by Tory Burch for some classy, natural heels, some complete with puka shells.

Plastic:

When I was in elementary school, my favorite aunt bought my sister and me see-through backpacks with sweetheart, candy-colored dots printed like polka-dots on the plasticy exterior. I was in heaven; I was the coolest kid at school. Now — obviously — I am psyched that clear accessories have returned for a second appearance. Opposite its former charm, new plastic accessories are sexy, modern and cutting-edge. Shoes combine leather, plastic and metallic for a sophisticated look; clear clutches are adorned with studs for a unique contrast — almost heavy sitting atop its see-through structure. Pick up a little plastic — let’s face it, it’s just too fun to miss out on.

Look at designs by Michael Kors, Alexander Wang and Fendi for some incredible plastic pieces.
