100 years ago: Fraternity dance scheduled

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 3, 1910: “It is in all good faith, decided the school board last night, that the Delta Omicron Omicron fraternity will give its dance for alumni on May 21. The fraternity is outlawed at the high school and students have signed pledges they will not join anymore, but there was fear the dance might cause new problems. The board will monitor events but will not intervene unless there are signs the group plans to reorganize at the school. Many invitations have been sent out. … Grant Township has learned that the government might help it build a levee to fight the flooding conditions and W.J. McEathron, a government drainage engineer, is encouraging in his explanations of how to pursue the federal help. … A new grade is planned on Indiana Street between Warren and Hancock en route to the university. The grade proposed earlier seems too irregular and steep. … Momentary drops in reserves in New York banks are troubling some and the buying power of the investing public seems exhausted. However, officials say the problem is only temporary and that things will get ‘back to normal’ in a few weeks.”
