Janet Horner, member of Altrusa International Inc. of Lawrence, was elected to serve on the Altrusa International Inc. Strategic Plan Committee during the 54th annual Altrusa District Eight Conference on April 22-24 in Emporia. District Eight includes 25 clubs in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Other local club members attending the conference were club president Elois Allan, Chris Day, Mary Robison, Linda Burton, Diana Deutsch, Kassie Edwards, Sally Brandt, Lori Michel, Betty Parks, Mary Chappell, Kristin Scott and Patie Fielding.

Day, Lawrence club president-elect, presented the Altrusa Accent at the Saturday business session. The Lawrence group also received honors for the second highest gain in membership for clubs larger than 50 members and honorable mention for its “Born to Read” program, which provides a new book to every newborn at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. In the 10 years since its inception, “Born to Read” has provided more than 10,000 books to children born at LMH.

Altrusa International, Inc. is an international association and community service organization of professional women who support the fight for literacy and against HIV/AIDS.

The Lawrence Music Club, a member of the National Federation of Music Clubs, will present a free National Music Week concert open to the public at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Lawrence Public Library.

This “casual concert” of classical pieces, popular and folk songs, will be presented by club members and will include choral selections performed by the Lawrence Music Club Musicians. The Scandinavian Folk Music group, Ingevald’s Spelmän, will feature Scandinavian traditional dance music and its influence on American music. Other groups participating include the New Horizon Clarinet Ensemble and the River City Reeds Saxophone Quartet.

The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on April 15 was directed by Chris Lane. North-South winners were Catherine Blumenfeld and Grant Sutton, first in A and B; Klee Zaricky and Betty Collier, second in A and B; Chris Lane and Mona Bell, third in A; Bobby Patton and Eleanor Patton, fourth in A, third in B, and first in C; and Bebe Huxtable and Wanna Roszel second in C.

East-West winners were Eldon Herd and Shari Krentzel, first in A; John Oxley and Elizabeth Jankord, second in A; Virginia Seaver and Shirley Reese, third in A; David Piro and Paul Heitzman, fourth in A; Judy Bevan and Barbara McCorkle, first in B and C; and Lois Clark and Jan O’Connor, second in B.

The Thursday Morning Mentor Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on April 22 was directed by Chris Lane. Winners were Barbara McCorkle and Debbie Bettinger, first; Jan O’Connor and Barbara Haverty, second; and Yvonne Hedges and Jean Khatib tied in third with Chris Lane and Becky Mullins.

The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on April 23 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Kent McCullough and Lois Clark, first in A; Mary Fenlon and Lester Dalton, second in A; Lynn Hui and Catherine Blumenfeld, third in A, and first in B and C; and Marilyn Martin and Jean Khatib, second in B and C.

East-West winners were Angie Davidson and Virginia Johnston, first in A, B and C; Ann Thompson ad Carol Ball, second in A and B; and Shirley Reese and Yvonne Hedges, third in A and B.

The Monday Evening Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on April 26 utilized the Howell movement and was directed by Virginia Seaver. Winners were Donna Johnson and James Masilamani, first in A; Larry Weatherholt and Steven Vossler, second in A; Virginia Seaver and Lois Clark third in A; Jolene Andersen and Patrick Musick, fourth in A, and first in B and C; and Adelaide Nyquist and Judy Bevan, second in B.

University Bridge Club announces results of its April 24 meeting, with hosts John and Jane Golden and Steven Bogler.

Blue winners were Ray Ikenberry, first; Steven Bogler, second; Julie Zajic, third; Walt Hicks, fourth; and Harold Riehm, fifth.

Pink winners were Virginia Williams, first; Hazel Stellmacher, second; Florence McNicoll, third; Willi Stark, fourth; and Myrna Ikenberry, fifth.
