Legislators have sent Gov. Mark Parkinson a bill supported by the parents of Jana Mackey, a Kansas University law student who was murdered in summer 2008.

The bill would expand the kinds of crimes that could be considered domestic violence and require authorities to direct offenders into treatment programs.

Mackey, who was well-known for her work on many social justice issues, was killed in Lawrence by a former boyfriend, who subsequently committed suicide.

Christie and Curt Brungardt of Hays, who pushed the bill, issued a statement through Jana’s Campaign, saying they were “overwhelmed” by passage of the measure.
