25 years ago: State House proposes ticket tax

A bill was introduced in the Kansas House that would add 25 cents to the price of every ticket sold to sporting events at state universities for one year. The goal was to raise more than $250,000, as soon as possible, to help the ailing Kansas All Sports Hall of Fame in the Watkins Museum in Lawrence. There was immediate opposition to the plan.

Planners were studying what moves to make regarding Stone Meadows West, about 26 acres on the extension of 15th Street. Some said a “nickel and dime” approach was being taken to develop and that a more cohesive plan should be set up.

Legislators were making cuts in the higher education budgets proposed in Topeka and it appeared unlikely they could be restored to the level of the Board of Regents requests.
