100 years ago: City library robbed

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 28, 1910: “A robbery was committed at the city library last night when entrance was made though one of the rear windows and $18 was taken from the cash drawer. … Gov. Stubbs spoke in Chicago to other governors about the merits of prohibition in making Lawrence and Kansas better off. He asked his listeners to ‘come and see Kansas. Sane, sober and patriotic folks are responsible for the Kansas law and fanatics were not able to prevail.’ … There is a plan afoot to build a modern new county poorhouse costing $30,000. The commissioners would be able to place the 17 inmates at the present farm in their new quarters sometime this summer. … The addition of another hundred feet of porous tiling at the water works some time ago gives the local company such a supply of water that it appears nothing further will have to be done for some time.”
