Late-term abortions dropped in 2009

? Late-term abortions in Kansas dropped in 2009, when the murder of Dr. George Tiller shut down the only clinic in the state performing them.

The state Department of Health and Environment reported Friday that the total number of abortions in Kansas declined 11 percent last year, to the lowest since 1990.

KDHE reported that 121 abortions in Kansas were performed after the 21st week of pregnancy, or 63 percent fewer than the 323 in 2008. Sixty-seven late-term abortions were performed last year when the fetus was viable, compared with 192 in 2008.
