100 years ago; KU encouraging high school debate

March 27, 2010

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 27, 1910: “The university is interested in encouraging debating among Kansas high school pupils and will furnish references to the schools in hopes the students will come to KU. State competitions are planned as part of the program. … Chinch bugs continue to be a farming problem and officials say a big concern is that too many farmers are neglecting to eliminate them with burning programs for bunch grass. The bug totals seems to be growing fast in the state. … Lawrence is rapidly becoming the home to traveling men and at least 300 who hit the road for business are living here, we are told. There is no formal organization here but some cities are seeing traveling sales people organizing into union-type groups. There is an effort to get as many people as possible here due to good transportation facilities that make it easy for them to do their jobs and get home for longer periods.”
