25 years ago: County counselor says no to resignation

Lexie Engleman, a Lawrence firefighter, was doing special exercises in the field of body-building to help in her work and also to get ready for competitive events. She was being coached by Mike Moddrell who said the 5-7 firefighter had been making solid progress.

The county commission formally moved to end the part-time job of county counselor but the man who had helt the job for 14 years, Dan Young, said he did not intend to go quietly. He said he would not resign as the commission had asked after ending the job.

Natural gas customers here were to see a 16 percent drop in rates, which would put the payment levels to where they were in 1981. Bill Salome of Kansas Public Service said the new rates would be 31 percent lower than the all-time high in January of 1983. There had been an adjustment downward for the supplier of the local firm.

Residents in the area of the 2000 block of Vermont Street were up in arms over the rash of vandalism for their autos and were considering neighborhood watch groups to cope with the problem that included cut tires and broken car windows. Damage had been quite heavy.
