100 years ago: New sources of natural gas sought

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 25, 1910: While Lawrence has never been troubled by a shortage of natural gas, a number of towns in the area, including Ottawa, have had trouble. New gas sources are being sought to prevent new problems. . . . Chancellor Strong is to address the Pan Hellenic groups here on the importance of improved scholarship records by the Greek groups at the university. A third more Greek fraternity men are behind the accepted levels in comparison to other students and efforts are being made to change that for the better. Some fraternities long have been regarded as academic laggards. . . . The growth of the summer session at the university has been so good and productive that there are plans to keep making it better and better. . . . S.H. Carmean, who came here in 1959 as a captain of the militia, is seeking the sheriff job here. Colleagues call the energetic candidate “the youngest old man we have ever seen.” They say he has not visibly aged for 20 years. . . . There is a movement for a new drainage district in Grant Township and it is due to take in N orth Lawrence.
