25 years ago: Legislators discuss changes to liquor laws
President Ronald Reagan asserted that “vital weapons systems, either conventional or strategic, must not be touched” in any efforts to reduce the federal deficit.
Legislative groups in Topeka continued to scuffle over the exact wordings for various liquor issues. Included were the issues of liquor-by-the-drink and the raising of the state drinking age from 18 to 21.
Road conditions, not good, were causing a furor in discussions in Palmyra Township where complaints about bad trafficways were growing as spring neared.
The game plan for a new recreation center in Holcom Park was dependent upon the coming election tally. Many efforts to get approval had been launched and chances for the needed center appeared good.
An 18-year-old Kansas City man was booked into jail here on seven charges, including one felony, stemming from a non-injury accident. A chase was required to catch him but there were no injuries.
Taverns and beer distributorships were considering their coming business rates as it appeared the state drinking age was sure to be boosted from 18 to 21. The action included beer.
