Legislators expected to have busy week as key deadline looms

? A busy week is in store for Kansas legislators as they approach a key point in the 2010 session.

Wednesday is the deadline for bills that originated in the House or Senate to clear the other chamber’s debate calendar. Certain pieces of legislation are exempt, such as those that come from budget, tax or federal and state affairs committees.

Legislative leaders expect to spend much of the week on measures of less importance, saving time later in the week to negotiate final versions that will eventually go to Gov. Mark Parkinson. What is unclear is when either chamber will debate budget bills.

The Senate Ways and Means Committee has endorsed a budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1, but the measure is $364 million short of being fully funded.
