Snow continues to blanket Midwest, but it shouldn’t last long

The first day of spring, Saturday March 20, 2010, wasn't looking so spring-like. About five inches of snow fell in the Lawrence area, leaving a white blanket on everything in sight.

Clearly Mother Nature didn’t get the memo that Saturday was the first day of spring.

Despite the arrival of the vernal equinox, Lawrence and much of northeastern Kansas was blanketed with 4 to 6 inches of snow.

Snow flurries are expected to taper off before dawn today, which is expected to be mostly cloudy with a high of 37 degrees, 6News meteorologist Gregory Postel said.

With temperatures dipping into the upper 20s during the night, Postel said roadways could have some icy patches this morning.

Kansans shouldn’t be too disheartened by Saturday’s blast back to winter. On Monday, temperatures could climb into the upper 40s, and Tuesday’s temperatures could reach into the upper 50s. Rain is forecast for Wednesday.

“I don’t think the snow will stick around too much longer,” Postel said.

Even better news is Postel’s prediction that the end of March and beginning of April should bring above-average temperatures.
