Lawrence youngsters Isaac Ward and Stefan Petrovic finished in second and fifth place, respectively, at Saturday’s 2010 Topeka Capital-Journal Regional Spelling Bee.

Ward was the last of 46 spellers eliminated after 25 rounds, including 13 rounds of back-and-forth with first-place winner Chase Brown of Richmond. Brown won the bee after spelling “genealogy” correctly, following Ward’s misspelling of “forbearance.”

Ward, an eighth-grader at Bishop Seabury Academy, is now an alternate for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in June.

Congrats on doing such a good job! I thought Isaac was going to go all the way. Yesterday's Topeka Capital Journal had a big article and a picture. The winner got the word "sumo" before "genealogy." (Even I can spell that without a spell checker.)
