Baton Rouge, La. ? Senior Robby Price went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and junior relief pitcher Brett Bochy earned his second save of the weekend as Kansas University earned a series victory over top-ranked LSU with an 8-4 victory Sunday in the rubber game of the three-game series.

“Obviously, it’s a great win for our program, beating a team as good as LSU down at their place,” KU coach Ritch Price said. “They have a really good team, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re playing for a national championship again this year.”

The Jayhawks improved to 11-4, winning for the sixth time in their last seven games, while the defending national champion Tigers fell to 13-2.

Kansas used clutch hitting to erase an early two-run deficit, scoring four runs in the fifth inning to take control.

Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, freshman Jordan Dreiling started the rally with a one-out double and scored on Casey Lytle’s double to bring the Jayhawks within a run. After a Price single, Brian Heere tied the game at 3 with a sacrifice fly.

Brett Lisher capped the rally with a two-run double following a two-out hit by Chris Manship.

The Kansas pitching staff made the runs stand up. After struggling through the first two innings, senior pitcher Cameron Selik got stronger in the middle frames to earn his fourth victory of the season.

Selik held the powerful LSU offense scoreless over the third, fourth and fifth to allow his offense to get him the lead. The senior held the Tigers to four runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts, stranding eight base-runners in his six innings of work.

Travis Blankenship and Bochy shut out the Tigers over the final three innings on two hits.

The Jayhawks’ offense added to their lead, scoring a run in the seventh on Lisher’s third RBI of the day, and two more in the eighth on RBI hits by Lytle and Price.

Kansas was playing without preseason All-American Tony Thompson and the team’s leading home run hitter, Jimmy Waters. Both missed the series with injuries.

Lytle led the way during the three-game series, going 7-for-13 with six runs scored and four doubles.

The win marked the second time in the last two years that KU has taken a three-game series from a No. 1-ranked team. Last year, the Jayhawks swept Texas when the Longhorns were the top-ranked club.

“We scheduled this series to give our guys some experience against plus-velocity and to see where we’re at before we head into our Big 12 schedule in two weeks,” Ritch Price said.
