Wichita Heights boys take Class 6A state title

Wichita Heights 56, Blue Valley Northwest 40

Emporia — Perry Ellis scored 20 points grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Wichita Heights past Blue Valley Northwest, 56-40, to win the Class 6A state boys basketball championship Saturday.

Dreamius Smith added 10 points for the Falcons, who finished 23-2.

The win makes Wichita Heights the first back-to-back champion in Class 6A since Wichita South in 1993-94.

Tyler Brashears and Brett Fisher each finished with 16 points to lead Blue Valley Northwest, which finished 17-8.

K.C. Sumner 66, Ottawa 45

Salina — Reese Holliday had 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead K.C. Sumner past cold-shooting Ottawa in the boys’ Class 4A state championship game.

Benny Parker added 11 points for K.C. Sumner, while Davonte Chaney and Anthony White each had 10. Sumner (22-4) led, 27-19, at halftime.

Adam Hasty led Ottawa with 20 points, and Semi Ojeleye added 14 points.

Wichita Collegiate 72, Minneapolis 32

Hutchinson — Bryce Cornejo scored 15 points as Wichita Collegiate trounced Minneapolis to win its second straight boys Class 3A state championship title.

Berean Academy 44, St. Mary’s Colgan 32

Manhattan — Lonnie Penner scored 18 points to lead Berean Academy to the boys Class 2A championship.

Girls

Olathe South 54, Wichita Heights 49

Emporia — Natalie Knight scored 23 points as Olathe South fought off Wichita Heights to win the Class 6A girls state championship.

Kelsey Balcom added 14 points for Olathe South, which finished the season 24-1.

Jhasmin Bowen led Wichita Heights with 17 points, all but three of them in the first half.

Cheney 52, Concordia 49

Salina — Allyssa Nikkel scored 15 points as Cheney knocked off defending state champion Concordia to win the girls’ Class 4A title.

Kylie Patterson added 13 points, and Payton Scheer had 11 points for Cheney, which finished the season with a 26-0 record.

Karly Buer scored 23 points to lead Concordia, which saw its 51-game winning streak end.

Thomas More Prep 56, Marion 45

Hutchinson — Rachel Jacobs finished with a game-high 18 points as Thomas More Prep won the Class 3A state championship.
