Lawrence woman arrested for child sex charges

March 9, 2010, 2:49 p.m. Updated March 9, 2010, 4:58 p.m.

A 22-year-old Lawrence woman was charged Tuesday for sex crimes against a 14-year-old girl.

The woman was charged with two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to prosecutors.

Police arrested the woman at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Gaslight Village mobile home community, 1900 W. 31st St., according to jail records.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Bill Cory said the crimes occurred sometime in January in the southeast portion of Lawrence. The victim and suspect are acquaintances.

The suspect is being held in Douglas County Jail on $30,000 bond and is scheduled to return to court March 23. It is Journal-World policy not to name suspects in sex crimes unless they have been convicted.

I think I'll reserve my comments on this one.

Some kind of sick animal..............she must be..

Awaiting to read danimal's comments on this one! Just hope the little girl can move on past this. I believe 1 in 4 children are abused sexually but that's just the reported incidents. In reality if counting non-reported crimes to kids could be as high as the ratio of 1 in 2.

I saw her name on the DGSO website today and was wondering when the story would be on the ljworld....sad very very sad makes me sick

easyliving 8 years, 3 months ago

She is guilty...there is no doubt in my mind. With all the facts right there in the story how could she not be?

"Indecent liberties with a child is engaging in any of the following acts with a child who is not married to the offender and is under 16 years of age: -- Sexual intercourse; or -- any lewd fondling or touching of the person of either the child or the offender, done or submitted to with the intent to arouse or satisfy the sexual desires of either the child or the offender, or both; or
-- soliciting the child to engage in any lewd fondling or touching of the person of another with the intent to arouse or satisfy the sexual desires of the child, the offender or another. "

"Aggravated indecent liberties with a child is the commission of indecent liberties with a child, as defined in K.S.A. 21-3503 and amendments thereto, by any guardian, proprietor or employee of any foster home, orphanage, or other public or private institution for the care and custody of minor children, to whose charge the child has been committed or entrusted by any court, court services officer, department of social and rehabilitation services or other agency under the color of law. "

In case anybody wondered what is actually being charged here, like I did, because I had no idea what "indecent liberties" were or what "aggravated" meant. Also: "Aggravated indecent liberties with a child is a class B felony."

this was all just a relationship gone bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

easyliving 8 years, 3 months ago

Maybe she is guilty, maybe they were in love, maybe the little girl is lying... OR

Maybe the little girl is actually a 31 year old orphan from Russia that has a rare disease that makes her look older, but is actually lying to the police because she really wants to be with the woman's husband. Oh wait that was a movie called Orphan...was it a true story?

I'm pretty sure she is guilty though...just read the facts.

Well to liljazii, greenworld, and chasmo -

I am sorry but there are laws in place that prohit that. It is not love gone bad, a 22 yr old seduced a 14 yr old (older knows how to manipulate people) and it became "love" or a "relationship". Don't think so. Yes they both may have been happy, but according to the LAW, it shouldn't happen. Not saying is doesn't and never gets reported, but if someone gets their feeling hurt, tooooo bad for the adult who should have know better.

kansasredlegs 8 years, 3 months ago

If she indeed did the act, let's just see if she is treated the same as male perpetrator. If so, she'll have much time to do... Class A, B, C, D etc. don't exist anymore.

mdrndgtl 8 years, 3 months ago

Greenworld raises an interesting point, maybe they were in love. Who are we to judge them?

lkr2 8 years, 3 months ago

LJW -- you might want to look at the jail records again. She was arrested at the other trailer park not Gas Light. the record shows 3323 Iowa! Just to keep the record straight.

It doesn't matter if this was a "relationship" gone bad or not...the legal age of consent is 16 in the State of Kansas...

Also, if she has no priors they will reduce it from a felony to a misdemeanor. Which sucks, but that is what they are doing in a Leavenworth Court right now. Fortunately the individual in the Leavenworth Court has 11 counts against him so far so he will get atleast 10 yrs but as much as 54...

BruceWayne 8 years, 3 months ago

love gone bad? who are we to judge? you are joking right? imagine if you will that the suspect is a 22 year old male. whole new set of rules now huh?

if I were a god fearing man, I'd wonder why the lord in the sky would make a girls body sexually active at 12-14 years old. Since I'm not, I believe that humans probably evolved this way to maximize their child rearing years. Now that modern medicine is ever increasing the length of our lives; will kids start maturing sexually later?

Sigmund 8 years, 3 months ago

chasmo (anonymous) says… "Are you sure this is not a relationship gone bad?"

Who ever heard of a 14 year old girl changing her mind?

Randall Barnes 8 years, 3 months ago

I didn't think this kind of stuff would ever happen in a place like gaslight village!

didn't happen in gaslight village thats where she was arrested.

LJW -- you might want to look at the jail records again. She was arrested at the other trailer park not Gas Light. the record shows 3323 Iowa! Just to keep the record straight.

lkr2 ljw was correct i just checked.

one man one woman thats all i'm gonna say.

it's not enabling, it's questioning biology vs. mans (just some cultures) law. I'm not condoning, just exploring questions. just because it's a distasteful subject doesn't mean it shouldn't be discussed.

booyalab 8 years, 3 months ago

AreUNorml, that's why for most of the history of civilization, there was no such idea as the long gradual passage to adulthood that is the "teens" in modern times. For most of the world now and for most of the history of the west, as soon as you could walk you could work. As soon as a girl was physically able, she could make babies. Although obviously she wasn't allowed to do it with just anyone. The upside is not just anyone could have access to her either.

chasmo 8 years, 3 months ago

I never intended to infer that it was or is a good idea. only that these girls and not that far apart in age, and I don't think permanently ruining a 22 year olds life over a bad decision is a good idea. Sorry to you all but I don't think killing someone or putting them in prison for long periods of time over this is a good idea. Some of you folks sound like the Taliban.

chasmo 8 years, 3 months ago

OutlawJHawk.... There is no child pornography or any other kind of porn on this computer. Get out of our country???? What if I have a different opinion than you I don't get to stay in your country? Who made that rule? Who gave you the country? Are you going to use your second amendment rights to take my first amendment rights away? I think your turban is too tight.

OutlawJHawk 8 years, 3 months ago

Chasmo-I am pleased you are not harboring child porn, however you are condoning a sexual relationship with a child by stating a "bad decision" (ie. molesting a child and the blog understatement of the year) should have little or no consequences. Yes, you can have a different opinion but I suggest your expressed opinions do not include supporting taking away the innocence of children. I do not have to worry about taking away your rights; our government will do it for you if you act like this alleged adult did with a child. So my suggestion to leave the country is valid, if you intend to violate OUR laws and want to avoid consequences. By the way, those wearing turbans marry 14 year-olds and younger in their countries and I have the same disdain for them.

chasmo 8 years, 3 months ago

Outlaw-- You have a propensity for leaping to conclusions. I am not condoning a sexual relationship with a minor. Breaking the law is in fact a bad decision. I did not say there should be little or no consequences. I think that people should abstain from sex until marriage if that is possible for them. I do not know the circumstances of these unfortunate people. I do however have empathy for people who make mistakes. Especially people who are so young. If I were a gambling man I would bet this was a consensual relationship. (Wrong headed and illegal) but entered into together. I know the adult has the greater responsibility but a 14 year old knows better too. No one died, as far as anyone knows there was no violence. In my own opinion. (blogs exist to let people opine) It would be a shame to ruin a 22 year olds life over this.

For the record having six kids of my own makes me empathetic towards young people who make mistakes.

OutlawJHawk 8 years, 3 months ago

Chasmo--Thank you for clarifying your position so I do not have to draw conclusions. My empathy resides wholly and only with the 14-year old. I do not share your view about the 22 year old. As a parent myself, I find it hard to believe that you as a parent would be empathetic toward a 22-year adult (a person old enough to have graduated from college, although probably not in this case) who had a sexual relationship and stole the innocence of your 14-year old chid who is in junior high. I would want justice, not leniency. But then again, we are not only different people, but probably different parents. Further, I am shocked about your view on abstinence, considering your big heart toward this alleged quasi-pedophile.

okay first of all, only a few of you got this right.. they WERE completly in love.. they are actually both 2 of my closest friends.. this whole thing was done out of a jealousy thing from someone. and personally, i think people that have no idea whats going on, should stay out of it.. no one knows exactly what happened and whats going on except those too.. and to correct you, she was picked up in GasLight trailor court, while the 14 yr old was in class.. she got a text that the 22 yr old was arrested and she almost lost it right in the middle of class... they are bth really good people.. and no one was forced into anything what so ever.. they both had strong feelings for eachother, and STILL do.. trust me.. the 14 yr old cries everyday because she misses the 22 yr old.. she is going insane and is scared whats going to happen.. so if you guys wanna know the true story about everything that goes on, dont listen to the news papers.. cuz they never have all the facts.. and half the time they dont even have correct information.. now im done here.. p.s~ get to know someone and get their true story before you go judging

iloveher 8 years, 3 months ago

all of this is crazzy.. like forreal.. and she was about to graduate college.. now that is all effed up now cuz of this crap.. the 22 yr old is an amazing person!! so is the 14 yr old. they are so much alike. they are basically the same person.. and thats why they were so close.. the 14 yr old is so in love with this young woman, that she supposably looked the cop straight in the eyes and said " if she goes to jail, i wanna go too" or something like that.. AGE IS JUST A DAMN NUMBER!! AND LOVE HAS NO LIMITS!! these laws are absolutly stupid and ridiculous!! why cant people just let people be happy?? people should just stay in their own business.. and i think its stupid for this crap to be put on tv and in newspapers.. its personal business.. its not the whole worlds business..

Linda Endicott 8 years, 3 months ago

The innocence of children!?

You show me a child over the age of 12 anymore who is truly innocent...they all swear worse than longshoremen (I've had to look up some of the things I've heard kids say...had no idea what they meant), wear as little clothing as possible, talk about sex constantly, and stay out till all hours of the night...

And they usually don't listen to just try getting a teenager to do something they don't want to do...

No, legally this isn't right...but it just shows me that 22 year olds aren't any more mature than 17 year olds...yet they're considered adults...even though their judgement isn't any better...

denak 8 years, 3 months ago

First of all, "age is not just a number" and love has a limit. If this woman had truly loved this girl, she would have backed off and given that girl the chance to grow up and mature into a woman and not exploit her as a child which is exactly what the 22 year old despite whatever rationalization you and the 22 year old engage in.

Secondly the fact that the 14 year old defends the 22 year old does not mean that the 14 year old wasn't sexually abused. Many sexual abuse victims try to protect their victimizers at a false sense of "love" or without a real understanding of what has happened to them. One can only hope that the 14 year old gets the treatment that she needs in order to understand what happened to her is not "love," was not consentual and that it was a crime.

Lastly, if this woman is guilty, I could care less that she was just about to graduate college or that she is a nice person. She is committed a crime and deserves to go to prison.

amesn 8 years, 3 months ago

@ iloveher I know you are simply attempting to defend your friends, yourself possibly, but here is probably not the best place to do so. Because this is a criminal case of who is still considered to be a child sexual misconduct, it may be best to not add fuel to any fire that could be ignited further if you know what I mean. Things you say could for one be taken out of context and also quite possibly be used in a court of law maybe if one felt there were statements made that could be helpful. It may be true these two were in love but the fact still remains that the age of consent in the state of Kansas is 16 and this 22 yr old that may have had a bright future ahead of her should have taken this into consideration before she acted unlawfully.

goneferever 8 years, 3 months ago

imma say this once n only once.. i know both of these girls.. the 14 year old has been my best friend fer 4 years, n the 22 year old ive known fer 7 - 8 months, i dated her cousin. n yes, they were in love.. very much so.. all this was started outta jealousy by the 22 year olds ex gf.. yes it was wrong fer ppl wit such an age difference to be together but u cannot help who u love.. so to those of you who dont know the real story, just shut up.. seriously..
