Soothing spa treatments, hot nightlife part of Oread experience

The Oread’s Lemon Bliss Spa includes skin treatments, massage and tanning.

The Cave nightclub features a sunken dance floor in a concrete, stone and granite environment.

Tonight “Home and Away” premieres the second in a two-part series previewing The Oread, the new luxury hotel located on the KU campus. From a day at the Lemon Bliss Spa to a night at The Cave nightclub, tonight’s installment also focuses on multi-purpose hotel amenities that cater to business functions and wedding celebrations.

Located on the lowest level of Lawrence’s newest premiere hotel, The Cave nightclub features a sunken dance floor and takes underground sound to a subterranean, state-of-the-art level. Newly designed subwoofers powered by 4,000-watt amplifiers and tuned by advanced sound processors create acoustic harmony in the concrete, stone and granite environment.

Complemented by computer-controlled and sequenced lighting, the Cave also features cold fog and glowing bubbles for a total sensory experience.

The Cave offers a private, rentable, VIP area complete with sparkling vinyl seating and granite bar tops.

“As you go down, you start hearing the sound of the music, and you can’t wait to get down there and get on the dance floor or to just be around, because if you don’t like to dance, it’s just fun because there’s so much energy out there,” says Nancy Longhurst, general manager.

Nearby pocket bars provide quieter, more intimate gathering spaces to belly up to a bar and feature wine, shot and martini specialties.

After getting a groove on at the Cave, a day at the spa may be in order. The Lemon Bliss Spa offers a variety of treatment options designed to be as rejuvenating and refreshing as its name implies. Furnished in cool, restful shades of blues and greens, the spa provides services including a caviar collagen masque, sugar butter body scrub, tanning, massage and specialty packages.

With a nod to the history of the Oread neighborhood, the hotel ballrooms bear significant namesakes. The Hancock ballroom, featuring soaring ceilings and drum-shaded chandeliers, honors the famous American patriot, and Hancock was formerly the name of 12th Street in Lawrence, the current address of the hotel. The Griffith ballroom is named for William Griffith, a notable KU professor and photographer whose home previously occupied the hotel site.

“Home and Away” premieres at 6:30 p.m. Mondays on Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 and replays throughout the week.
