KU athletics director places Williams Fund official on administrative leave

Rodney Jones, assistant athletics director with the Williams Educational Fund, watches pregame introductions from his courtside seat prior to tipoff for the Jayhawks' game against Oklahoma, Monday, Feb. 20, 2010 at Allen Fieldhouse.

A point man for helping Williams Fund donors connect with Kansas Athletics Inc. — including access to postseason basketball tickets — has been placed on administrative leave by Athletics Director Lew Perkins.

Rodney Jones, assistant athletics director for the Williams Fund, has been stripped of his duties, which include servicing the needs of the fund’s more than 5,000 members.

Jim Marchiony, a department spokesman, confirmed the personnel move Monday afternoon. He declined to disclose reasons for the administrative leave, or when Jones would be back — if at all.

Marchiony and other department staffers will be handling Jones’ duties heading into the postseason, as donors gather to watch their Jayhawks march toward what they hope is a second national championship in three years.

“We’ve got a lot of talented dedicated people who will make sure that our donors receive the service that they expect and deserve,” Marchiony said.

Jones started work at Kansas Athletics in 1997. Before becoming assistant athletics director for the Williams Fund, Jones had been manager of the KU Ticket Office.

Marchiony described Jones as one of the department’s chief fundraisers, and as one of many staffers who helped put together the points system that governs access to tickets for football and basketball games.
