A point man for helping Williams Fund donors connect with Kansas Athletics Inc. — including access to postseason basketball tickets — has been placed on administrative leave by Athletics Director Lew Perkins.

Rodney Jones, assistant athletics director for the Williams Fund, has been stripped of his duties, which include servicing the needs of the fund’s more than 5,000 members.

Jim Marchiony, a department spokesman, confirmed the personnel move Monday afternoon. He declined to disclose reasons for the administrative leave, or when Jones would be back — if at all.

Marchiony and other department staffers will be handling Jones’ duties heading into the postseason, as donors gather to watch their Jayhawks march toward what they hope is a second national championship in three years.

“We’ve got a lot of talented dedicated people who will make sure that our donors receive the service that they expect and deserve,” Marchiony said.

Jones started work at Kansas Athletics in 1997. Before becoming assistant athletics director for the Williams Fund, Jones had been manager of the KU Ticket Office.

Marchiony described Jones as one of the department’s chief fundraisers, and as one of many staffers who helped put together the points system that governs access to tickets for football and basketball games.

RJ is a really good guy and D Manning's longtime best friend. I have played softball with them both for years and years and not one post on here has any truth to them. If Lew thought he was scalping tickets don't you think he would be fired instead of on leave? Hello, this is the AD that doesn't give a darn who or what gets in his way. And we are way better to have him running the show..... I'm sure the most they have on him is perhaps he handed the ticket to the porn starlett that is proud of her university.... I wonder if if ole coach Townsend caught a broomstick upside his head when he got home after his wife read the article that he's inviting a young woman to a game after meeting her on a plane..hmmmmm RJ will be fine,,, either at KU or another university

So what, just because Mangino got mailed a few Big 12 tourney tickets.

0

Vinny1 4 years, 1 month ago

Thats because Bob has no idea what he is talking about.

Neither does anyone saying anything about the tickets given to Samantha Ryan. Neither does anyone saying anything about Lew or the entire KUAC being corrupt.

Rodney is the fall guy for the porn star tickets instead of the person who actually requested them. I'll just say it's all B.S.

0

Vinny1

Interesting! Doesn't sound good for Mr. Jones. Where you one of them that bought the tickets from Rodney. I have a hard time thinking Rodney himself was on a corner scalping tickets or did they actually buy them through his office.....

0

Vinny1 4 years, 1 month ago

Lets just say there were multiple people who were turned away at the door with completely legit looking tickets that just wouldn't scan...all bought from the same scalper.

0

hawkergrl 4 years, 1 month ago

vinny1:

So do you have an inside on the story that he was scalping tickets???? That'd be my speculation, but don't know for sure.

0

INTERESTING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe the department should check out some of the other OU cronies he helped bring in the HOUSE????

There is one single post in all of these comments that actually has anything to do with the story.

Congrats LloydDobbler.

Godot (anonymous) says… Why does a corporation so powerful and profitable as KU Athletic Corporation deserve tax exempt status? Why shouldn't it pay taxes like any other corporation?

This should go for churches, too. Why do they get off tax-free, so we have to pay more?

FarneyMac.... I ain't bitin'.....

0

BigAl 4 years, 1 month ago

Fair enough 4everahawk, but after several years with Lew Perkins I don't know of anything remotely close to being improper. So, why assume the worst? The facts are that improvements have been made all over campus. I don't think anyone can point at anything improper that Lew Perkins has done. I've been wrong in the past and will be again but after all these years, there is no sign that "bricks will begin to fall". Quite the contrary. The facts simply do not support any wrongdoing. People may be upset at the methods but that doesn't mean anything sinister is going on.

By the way, I am a Williams Fund member.

0

4everahawk 4 years, 1 month ago

BigAl I believe you are naive... Those who buy into this will be the ones most shaken when the bricks begin to fall.......even in today's rough economy, integrity still is more important than money.

Maybe NOW they'll finally get around to taking Roy Williams' name off the Williams Fund.

"I miss Coach Bob"

Oh, so YOU'RE the one.

Bob Frederick was a nice man. He also would've been the perfect AD for KU back in the 1950's. In the 1990's, he got left in the dust by the rest of the conference.

0

Scruggsy 4 years, 1 month ago

I agree BigAl. I think it all stems from the Fieldhouse seating deal from when he was first hired... But nobody seems to complain about how awesome the Fieldhouse improvements are...

0

BigAl 4 years, 1 month ago

I just love all the Lew bashing. Although, I do not know what Lew has done wrong except improve the athletic facilities all over campus. He has also raised a lot of money for the dept and doesn't seem to care what people think of him. Apparently, that is what tends to drive people nuts.

Basically, he has done his job and he has done it very well.

This is off-subject, but thank you, Mr. Kealing, for explaining the reason for the recent multiple-post problems. I haven't done that myself, but it's only blind luck that I haven't. I thought the slowness in posting comments was due to a problem in my own computer (which is not immune to problems). Relieved to learn that the J-W On-line's computer sometimes rides in the same boat mine does.

0

Scruggsy 4 years, 1 month ago

I have to believe there is some good reason they are letting this guy go right now, at a time when "access to postseason basketball tickets" is probably a pretty big job. And it will now have to be done by someone else. So I don't think it is Lew having a wild hair somewhere. Let's just hope it doesn't somehow drift into the realm of improper benefits or something. (I doubt it)...

Regarding the slowdown & the double-posting issue. Putting an expiration date on blogs & posts, comments, & stories would probably clear up some space. I would do a sort and clear out blogs that have no redeeming value first. After the in my pants blog has been removed there should be a noticeable speed increase. I assume that if I mentioned the effect on the cumulative IQ of posts some would be offended, so I'll refrain. That's just my loving and charitable nature shining through again. Have a blessed day.

Because something is happening here But you don’t know what it is Do you, Mister Jones?

@KU_cynic - As someone who claims to be a professor, one would assume you would know that only words in quotation marks are direct quotes. Only one of those phrases you quote was actually in quotation marks in the article, and it was the most innocuous one. The other two phrases were clearly written by the LJW reporter, not said by Marchiony, or else they'd be in quotes.

Just another vintage KU_cynic hatchet job....

@jackconnor1 - If they made that change, the number of comments on this site would drop dramatically.

Why does a corporation so powerful and profitable as KU Athletic Corporation deserve tax exempt status? Why shouldn't it pay taxes like any other corporation? Why should KUAC be allowed to receive contributions from other corporations, tax free, while the so-called generous contributors receive tax deductions for their contributions? Seems like a double tax dodge, to me.

Jonathan, could there potentially be a software change if you find something that prevents paranoid lunatics from posting?

0

No software change. Mostly, I think it's impatience with the speed with which comments are loading, so people hit post twice. We're trying to figure out what's causing the slowdown but we haven't found it yet. Hopefully soon. It's none of the usual problems.

0

KU_cynic 4 years, 1 month ago

Who knows, but the language coming out of KUAC sounds like point blank character assassination:

"...stripped of duties..."

"...or when Jones would be back -- if at all."

"... make sure that our donors receive the service that they expect and deserve.”

Translation: "You're toast, Jones. Hit the bricks."

A textbook book case on how (not) to handle a potentially sensitive personnel and public relations issue. Vintage Marchioni hatchet job.
