A local police lodge is sponsoring a free hunter education course in April for people wanting to learn more about gun safety and who want to continue on to get a hunting license.

The Lawrence Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 2 is sponsoring the class, which will take place the second full week of April. Those interested must attend both days of classes to pass.

The first class is from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. April 12 at Building 21 on the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. The second day is from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 17 at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, to which class instructors will give directions. An optional lunch will be offered for $2 on April 17.

Lawrence police Sgt. Max Miller said that anyone born after 1957 had to have a hunter’s education certificate before getting a hunting license in Kansas.

To register, call Miller at (785) 832-3288 and leave a voicemail with name, phone number and birthday of each student enrolling in the course. Students should then show up at the April 12 class for more information.
